Summer racing started with a bang – literally with a team’s time trial and a Criterium at Wade Court. It was great to see Adam Lancaster travel from Latrobe Valley to represent his club, but it was bad to see two riders fall. Ben Dowsett fell as he cranked up the pace in his time trial, with nobody else involved. Gary Jago also fell in his Criterium racing around the corner near the Somerton Park Road roundabout and again nobody else was involved. Both riders had scratches and torn clothing; however seemed to escape major injury. This is a timely reminder that we should all check our equipment, replace tyres and cleats as required and that when racing Criteriums, take care on the corners.
First race of the day was a Team Time Trial which consisted of teams of three riders (an A grader, a B grader and a C grader), with each rider completing two laps of the Wade Court circuit.

Race Report thanks to Judith Dove
The inaugural Stratford to Dargo race was held by Wellington Cycling Club on Saturday November 7th. With eighty-one entries divided into three elite grades and two masters categories, race director Mike Renehan received commendation from Cyclesport Victoria officials for his hard work. The race course covered a distance of 104km, starting at Stratford, taking riders along the Stockdale road, tackling some tough undulations in Beverley’s Road, through Dargo for a further 14kms of steep climbs including a climb graded at 13 percent in the final 500 metres.
Warm weather added to the challenge with starting temperature of 28 degrees rising to 32 degrees as the tiring riders began the heartbreaking climb past Dargo. Forty-five abandoned the race before the finish, some initially continuing past Dargo but turning back after experiencing the severity of the steep climbs.
Until now, one of the toughest hill climb events offered in Victoria, has been the annual Baw Baw challenge. Cyclesport officials and riders saw parallels in this event and the club expects more riders to tackle this challenge next year.
Results:- In A grade Rowan Dever powered up the last 10km, winning in a time of 3:37, four minutes ahead of Michael Knoff from the Carnegie-Caulfield club in second and Thomas Donald from St Kilda. B grade was won by Stephen Cousins from Blackburn in a time of 3:55 with Stuart Grigg from Ballarat in second and David Bertovic from Hawthorn in third. C grade winner Luke James from St Kilda rode 3:51, four minutes faster than the B grade winner, slipping under the handicappers guard. Wesley Cordingley from St Kilda and Steven Del Gallo from Geelong in third.
In Masters 1,2,3, Andrew van Slobbe from Hawthorn won in a time of 3:52 from Paul Ingwersen of Albury-Wodonga and David Weresczuk of Carnegie-Caulfield in third. The Masters 4 plus event saw Ken Ford of Carnegie-Caulfield, a five time winner of the Baw Baw classic win a time of 3:55 from Gerard Donnelly of Carnegie-Caulfield with Roland Elsdon the best placed Gippsland rider take third place.
Locally Ben Dowsett from Wellington Cycling Club and Warren Meade and Eric Sjerp from Bairnsdale and Riviera Cycling Club were the only riders to complete the course.
On Sunday, the main street of Maffra was transformed into a criterium circuit for fast racing as part of the weekend.. In A grade fresh from racing in Belgium, Bairnsdale rider Chris D’Amelio broke away from his bunch to win the event from Latrobe Valley rider Darren Spiteri and St Kilda rider Thomas Donald. Stephen Cousins from Blackburn made it a weekend double winning ahead of Blackburn riders Cameron Parlevliet and Andrew Christie and in C grade Conor Murtagh from Brunswick broke away leaving local rider Alec Mates and St Kilda rider Amy Bradley in the minor placings.

The club held racing at the Sale Velodrome on Saturday November 28th. Given that Sale is lucky enough to have its own Velodrome, it was a fantastic opportunity to use the facility to provide riders with a track racing experience. The majority of riders were on Road bikes, with three from Bairnsdale demonstrating track bike riding skills during the afternoon. To simulate track racing, all riders were to restrict themselves to one gear during the racing and requested to not use brakes. As a safety measure road bikes and track bikes were not used on the track at the same time.
The opening event was a “Flying 200” where Gary Jackson, a current National champion in this event demonstrated how it is done by riding a 12.74 seconds.
Track Bikes
Gary Jackson 12.74
Baden Nicholls 13.67
Eddie Smith 18.30
Road Bikes
Phil Brown 14.51
Kevin Read 14.54
Stuart Derham 14.81
Shane Dove 14.90
Gary Jago 15.34
Grant Smith 15.57
Kristy Glover 16.00
Leigh Thompson 16.51
Based on the times, sprint races were held in pairs as follows:-
Gary Jackson showed Baden Nicholls a clean pair of heels in both heats
Shane Dove was lucky to win his first heat against Stuart Derham, but more convincing in the second heat
Phil Brown showed his time trialling endurance in a long sprint against Kevin Read in both heats
A group of three, Kristy Glover, Leigh Thompson and Grant Smith took to the track for two heats with Leigh Thompson taking out both heats and Kristy and Grant sharing second and third place
Team Pursuits were next on the agenda, Up first was the “Road bikes” vs the “Track Bikes”
Shane Dove and Stuart Derham did the “roadies’ justice, with three laps in 1:27 against Gary Jackson and Baden Nicholls in 1:29
The next heat was Maffra vs Gippsland with the power of three Kristy Phil and Leigh in 1:35 too strong for Kevin and Grant in 1:38
The final event was scratch races.
Race one – A grade road
- Shane Dove
- Phil Brown
- Gary Jago and
- Stuart Derham
Race Two – B grade road
- Kevin Read
- Grant Smith
- Leigh Thompson
- Kristy Glover
Overall it was a successful day and with lots of events on offer, the club will run another day if people are interested. With road and track bike options, there were races for everyone. If you want to see photo’s of the day click on the link below. (Thanks to Judith)
